BSO On Your Doorstep: Curious Creatures Family Concert

Join us for a concert of family friendly music, with BSO and local young musicians from the Isle of Wight.

Come and join 14 BSO musicians, a young Isle of Wight string group, and someone to guide you through the music – this relaxed performance is perfect for young audiences going to a concert for the first time.  The afternoon will involve some listening, some participatory elements, and you’ll be sure to experience a mixture of styles – from Bjork to Moana, as well as relaxing classics. Designed with families in mind, let the music take you from forests to oceans and explore the curious creatures of the natural world. Do join us for this adventurous afternoon!

Southampton University Symphony Orchestra at Turner Sims: Symphonic Dances from West Side Story

Free informal performance by Southampton University Symphony Orchestra at Turner Sims on Wednesday 4th December at 7pm.

Southampton University Symphony Orchestra and Turner Sims would like to invite you to a free performance featuring Leonard Bernstein's thrilling ‘Symphonic Dances from West Side Story’!

Featuring songs and dances from Bernstein's hit musical West Side Story, which has recently seen a brand new film remake. Though you don't need to know the musical to be able to enjoy the wonderful music! This performance is perfect for local families with children up to 15 and is an ideal opportunity for young people learning an instrument, who are interested in learning an instrument, or anyone looking for a fun evening out! We’re aiming to introduce as many young people to the amazing world of orchestral music as we can!

This informal performance will be on Wednesday 4th December at 7pm at Turner Sims, the music venue at University of Southampton Highfield Campus, and will last about an hour.

Under 18s must be accompanied by an adult.

Parking: Free parking is available in all University car parks after 5pm on weekdays. Details for other modes of transport can be found on the Turner Sims website.

Schools Christmas Concert at O2 Guildhall Southampton: featuring SYWB

Join us at Southampton Guildhall to continue the Southampton Schools Music Association of schools Christmas events at Southampton Guildhall this Christmas!

Jo Downs has written a new Christmas Songbook and narrative script for this event which is loosely based on the Nativity story with three original songs for KS1 and three original songs for KS2, spanning a variety of genres and styles.

Southampton Youth Wind Band will also be performing in our Christmas Schools’ Celebration Concert.

Parking: available in the City Centre car parks.

Enjoy performances from Youth Rock Bands, Rappers & Schools of brand new songs based on well-known Christmas Stories written by Jo Downs, along with some classic Christmas hits!

There will be music inspired by tales of the Christmassaurus, Elf on the Shelf, The Grinch & Christmas Ballads.

SYWB Interactive Family Concert: Travelling through Time and Space

Travel through time and space with Southampton Youth Wind Band in this interactive family concert at MAST Mayflower Studios.

Lots of fun for all the family is to be had through this interactive concert experience suitable for children from 2+ years. Come along and enjoy listening to lots of well known tunes on a theme of Travelling Through Time and Space including well known pieces from Doctor Who and Star Wars.

This will be a relaxed concert with plenty of opportunities to move, join in, have fun and learn about music. Please note there may be some loud percussion sounds at times so please bring your own ear defenders for anyone who is sensitive to noise.

Running time: 45 mins

Set sail for an epic evening of entertainment as over 600 young musicians from across Southampton commemorate the 400th anniversary of the Mayflower Ship: a pioneering journey which created connections that changed the world.

Led by Southampton Music Hub, in collaboration with Mayflower Theatre, and hosted by Soweto Kinch, the evening will feature musical performances from bands and orchestras of all different shapes and sizes from across the City of Southampton and celebrate the life-changing power of music, including, the premiers of Mayflower 400 inspired projects  Big Sing: The Journey and Symphony 400: The Voyage

This workshop is aimed at children in year two and above who are interested in exploring the range of percussion that is available, whether they already have music lessons or are a complete beginner. A pair of drumsticks will be useful but not essential.

  • Talks and presentations on Indian Classical Music

  • Short performances with improvisations using Raga and Talas structures

Featuring Chandra Chakraborty (Vocal), Tofail Ahmed and Sanju Sahai (Tabla)

  • Chandra Chakraborty is an Indian vocalist with a melodious voice. She performs regularly in USA, UK, India, Pakistan and Bangladesh. She is the artistic director of one of the top three organisations in UK: Saudha, Society Of Poetry and Indian Music.
  • Tofail Ahmed is a highly accomplished musician with several years of training and experience. He is a teacher, workshop leader and a remarkable performer of different forms of Indian Classical Music.
  • A phenomenal and outstanding Tabla player, Sanju Sahai is well known for mesmerising and captivating his audience with his power, virtuosity and complete spontaneity.

On Saturday 29 September, from 2–4pm, Southampton Music Hub will be hosting two hours of free family music-making workshops in Guildhall Square as part of the Music in the City festival. The free workshops will be open to all ages and abilities — there is no need to bring an instrument, simply come along and join in with one of the free, fun activities taking place across the afternoon.

  • A phenomenal and outstanding Tabla player, Sanju Sahai is well known for mesmerising and captivating his audience with his power, virtuosity and complete spontaneity.
  • Giuliano Modarelli (Italy) is one of the most interesting musicians who plays Indian ragas on classical guitar applying the techniques of the Indian instrument, the sarod. He has collaborated with maestros of Indian classical music and created fusion music.
  • Pooja Angra is an Indian vocalist with a melodious and mellifluous voice. She has PhD in Indian Classical music.

Southampton Music Hub and Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra presents Family Proms — a spectacular celebration of music performed by, and for, families of all shapes and sizes from across the city.

Family Proms includes the chance to hear bass instruments as you’ve never heard them before, with performances from In at the Deep End: a quintet of musicians from Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra consisting of four of the lowest orchestral bass instruments — tuba, trombone, bassoon and double bass — plus percussion.

In at the Deep End will be joined by performers of all ages and abilities from the free Family Orchestra, Family Singing and Family Rock Jam workshops currently taking place across the city, alongside Fiona Funnell and Groove Merchant.
