Southampton and IOW Music

We are a growing partnership of local, regional and national organisations, working together to build an inspiring and inclusive programme of music making that reflects the cultural diversity of our areas. Together we are dedicated to delivering life-changing music experiences that enrich the life, health and well-being of our children and our communities.

Southampton and IOW Music is the strategic lead for Southampton and the Isle of Wight for the South Coast Music Partnership, the Music Education Hub for Solent, Bournemouth, Christchurch and Poole.

Inclusion

Inclusion is a journey, not a final destination.

All children face barriers and challenges in their lives, which may be long-term, or temporary; seen, or unseen; discrete, or intersectional. Southampton Music Hub’s focus is on understanding these barriers and challenges, and finding ways to change what the hub does so that these barriers and challenges do not hold any child or young person back from fulfilling their musical ambitions.

To help us achieve this purpose, and become more inclusive, we will focus on:

  • Young people shaping and leading the music-making available to them

    • Under-represented young people have their voices heard, and responded to

    • Young people have their unique identities recognised and valued

    • Young people are empowered to make change

  • Recognising and working towards a wider set of musical and additional outcomes

    • Developing the workforce

    • Sharing with a wider set of stakeholders

    • Working towards a broader set of accreditations

  • Breaking down the barriers young people in the most challenging circumstances face

    • Music-making opportunities align with the musical tastes of young people

    • Music-making opportunities are available in school, and out of school

    • Sharing this learning to make the core offer more inclusive

  • Young people taking part in music led and made by people who are like them, and people who are different from them

    • Diversify the workforce — changing what we look for, to change who we find

    • Diversifying musical styles and genres

    • Workforce contribute to creating and changing the organisational culture

  • Celebrating the achievements of young people, and having them contribute to the cultural life of their communities

    • Engaging with a wider set of stakeholders

    • Young people are empowered to bring about social change

    • Young people are empowered to share their achievements
